Acupuncture
Peter Liebenthal, Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist
Peter
is comfortable using Chinese, Taiwanese, Five Element and Japanese
style acupuncture and will tailor his treatment for each individual. He
mainly uses a Japanese style of acupuncture that integrates traditional
Asian theory with modern Western Medical knowledge. With this highly
effective style, he finds painful points on the body and then instantly
releases them with corresponding distal points.
Peter feels lucky
to have discovered this 4,000-year old holistic medicine and truly
loves and appreciates the opportunity to help patients on their path
towards healing and well-being. He will do whatever he can to assist
them in this process, which may include herbal prescriptions, qi gong
exercises as well as dietary and lifestyle advice. He is excited to be
a part of the Skyline Wellness Center and serve the surrounding
community.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture
is a 4,000-year-old holistic healing system that originated in China.
Over time it has successfully treated billions of people in Asia and is
now becoming increasingly popular in the West. It is a complete system
for the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of a wide variety of
conditions.
Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese philosophy
that sees all sicknesses in the body in terms of an imbalance in the
energetic field of the body. This energetic field has been carefully
mapped by the Chinese and they have discovered over 400 points that,
when stimulated, can effect systemic changes in the body. These points
are stimulated by the insertion of very fine, sterile and disposable
needles. A combination of these points is carefully selected by the
acupuncturist to help activate the body’s innate ability to heal itself
and return to a state of balance.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
The
needles that are used in acupuncture are much thinner than the
hypodermic needles that many people are scared of. At most, patients
will feel a slight prick, or a warm, numb or heavy feeling momentarily.
During the time the needles are in, patients may feel different subtle,
non-painful sensations in the body. Patients often are surprised by how
pleasant and relaxing an acupuncture treatment is, and many patients
become so relaxed that they fall asleep.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture
has local and systemic effects on the nervous and circulatory systems
and can stimulate the endocrine system. Acupuncture has distinct
effects on restoring homeostasis to the body and is effective for
animals as well. From an Asian perspective, acupuncture works by
affecting a patients’ qi (often translated as “vital energy”, qi is the
common denominator of all things). By influencing the qi, acupuncture
has an effect on the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of a
person.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT OUR ACUPUNCTURIST?
Peter
Liebenthal is trained in all five branches of traditional Chinese
Medicine: acupuncture, herbs, massage, dietary therapy and qi gong. In
addition to his Traditional Chinese Medicine training, he has also
received specialized training in Five Element Acupuncture, a wonderful
system for emotional and spiritual issues, and in Japanese acupuncture.
Using Japanese acupuncture, he is able to not only understand the
patients’ condition from a traditional Asian perspective, he is also
able to gain an understanding of what is going on from a Western
physiological model. The power of this system lies in being able to
find painful areas that correspond to specific illnesses’ and then to
use associated points that can instantly release the pain and therefore
treat the underlying sickness. This style is very gentle and allows the
patient to instantly feel the effects of the needles.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?
During
the first visit, the acupuncturist will do a comprehensive interview in
order to fully understand the patient’s unique condition. Then the
patient will lie down and the acupuncturist will feel the patient’s
pulse and look at their tongue. Then the acupuncturist will press
different areas of the abdomen, neck and back in order to further
deepen his diagnosis. Based on the diagnostic findings, the
acupuncturist will select what points he will needle. The patient will
then be able to rest for about 20 minutes, after which the
acupuncturist will select another combination of needles and the
patient will be allowed to rest again.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
When
done by a trained professional, acupuncture is very safe and has no
side effects. Acupuncture does not add anything physical to the body
and therefore is a safe complement to Western Medicine and can be
safely used with drugs.
WHAT CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?
The
World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health
(NIH) have both thoroughly investigated acupuncture and have concluded
that it is effective for a wide range of conditions. The WHO has a list
of over 100 conditions for which acupuncture is effective including
over 30 where acupuncture has been proven to be effective through
controlled clinical trials including pain of various body parts,
depression, painful menstruation, gastritis, essential hypertension,
stroke, arthritis and allergic rhinitis.
What is Qi Gong?
Qi
Gong is an ancient Chinese exercise that integrates movement,
breathing, and awareness to cultivate vital energy and promote
healing. Millions of people around the world practice Qi Gong daily to
help prevent illness, reduce stress, and boost overall wellbeing.
Because of its effectiveness, Qi Gong is gaining broad popularity as a
holistic healthcare option for physical, emotional, and mental
disharmony.
Our Qi Gong Practice:
The Qi
Gong Practice at Skyline Wellness Center offers classes inspired by the
authentic teachings of Wild Goose Qi Gong, which is a complete set of
medical exercises that originated more than 1,600 years ago. With its
flowing, gentle, whole body movements, Wild Goose Qi Gong mimics the
grace of wild geese. This style strengthens the body, sharpens the
mind, improves coordination, and deepens breathing.
Our Instructor:
Peter Liebenthal is a student of Qi Gong Master Dr. Bingkun Hu, disciple
to the legendary Grand Master Yang Mei-Jun, the 27th generation lineage
holder
of the Wild Goose System. Yang Mei-Jun shared this previously secret
system to the public, and it has since become one of the most popular
forms of Qi Gong in China. Peter has been practicing Qi Gong daily for
over 10 years and offers individual instruction by appointment.
We are proud to offer Community Acupuncture. In this style of Acupuncture, several patients are treated together in one room for a lower cost alternative to standard models of Acupuncture. We offer this option in order to serve the greater community and to ensure that all patients are able to come in often enough to see dramatic results. An initial 30 minute consultation is required. Call the office for schedule and pricing details.
